SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with much sadness of the combat death in Iraq of Lance Corporal Sean P. Maher, U.S.M.C., of Grayslake on Wednesday, February 2, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Sean was born on March 19, 1985, to Daniel C. Maher and Janet R. Maher; he graduated from Warren High School in June of 2003, where he was a superior athlete, a talented defense linebacker, and a valuable part of the swimming team; and

WHEREAS, On his eighteenth birthday and before graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps; he graduated from recruit training on November 20, 2003, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California; he attended the advance weapon school at Camp Pendleton and graduated in January of 2004; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Maher was assigned to Hawaii for his permanent duty station; he was a member of Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine, 31st Marines Expeditionary Unit, 1st Marine Division; on October 5, 2004, he reported for duty in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, He was tragically killed in action from small arms fire while conducting combat operations in the Al Anbar Province and has been recommended for the Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, Sean was a young man who always had a kind word for a friend or neighbor; he was the type of son that would make any mother or father proud; his kindness touched many people in a gentle way; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Lance Corporal Sean P. Maher has been deeply felt by many, especially his father, Daniel C. Maher; his mother, Janet R. Maher; his sister, Katrina J. Maher; his sister-in-law, Rebecca Maher; and his brother, Daniel C. Maher II, who is currently in the service of this country in the United States Navy; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Lance Corporal Sean P. Maher, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Lance Corporal Maher and his willingness to serve his country, which led to him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our sincere condolences for their loss.
