SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the passing of Harold R. Callahan of Waukegan, Illinois, who passed away on November 19, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Harold Callahan was born at home during a snowstorm in Waukegan on January 4, 1925, the youngest child of James J. and Helen (Bauer Wall) Callahan; and

WHEREAS, Harold Callahan attended St. Anastasia Catholic Grade School, Waukegan Township High School, Class of 1942, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Class of 1949; he was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater; and

WHEREAS, Harold Callahan and Joan Pfau were united in holy matrimony on October 22, 1949; and

WHEREAS, He owned and retired from his family's business, North Shore Printers, Inc., in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Harold Callahan never lived more than a half of a block off of North Avenue in Waukegan, with the exception of college and the Army; he was active in his community, including a 30-year membership in the Waukegan Rotary Club, President of the North Shore Club of Printing House Craftsmen, school board member, football, basketball, and track coach at St. Anastasia Catholic Grade School, Chairman of the Citizens Committee to form a Waukegan Unit School District, President of the Waukegan-North Chicago Chamber of Commerce, President of the United Way of Lake County, a sponsor of Junior Achievement, a member of the Waukegan-North Chicago Jaycees, Coach and President of Northside Athletic Club, Chairman of the Lake County Public Building Commission that built the jail, a board member of the Lake County Easter Seal Society, a board member of the Lake County Republican Federation, a board member of the Printing Industry of Illinois, a member of the Illinois CPA Society, a member of the Waukegan City Club, a board member of Habitat for Humanity of Lake County, a recipient of the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award, a golden member of the Glen Flora Country Club, a lifetime member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association, and a lifetime member of Beta Eta Alumni Association (Pi Kappa Alpha Chapter), his chapter in college; and

WHEREAS, Harold Callahan is survived by his best friend and wife of 57 years, Joan; his wonderful children, Joe (Caroline), Peter (Crystal), Jay (Mary), Melissa, Charlotte (Martin), Shelagh (Ray), and Amy; and his beautiful grandchildren, Kimberly, Kellyn, Katie, Tierney, Chandler, Zach, Jake, Matt, Grant, Zoe, and Henry; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Callahan; his sister, Alice (Bill) Galbraith; his brother, Edward Callahan; his son-in-law, David Franklin; and his adored son, Henry; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Harold Callahan; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harold Callahan.
