HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, September 11th is National Firefighters' Day;
3 there are an estimated 1,140,900 firefighters in the United
4 States, of which 316,950 are career firefighters and 823,950
5 are volunteers; and
 
6     WHEREAS, In the past 10 years, there have been an average
7 of 1,684,200 fires in the United States each year; an average
8 of 3,597 Americans lose their lives each year in fire-related
9 tragedies, of which 107 are heroic firefighters dying in the
10 line of duty; and
 
11     WHEREAS, These firefighters did not lose their lives in
12 vain but did so in the attempt to save lives, property, and aid
13 the general well being of others; and
 
14     WHEREAS, There is no better example of the true need for
15 and bravery of American firefighters than on the tragic day of
16 September 11th, 2001; and
 
17     WHEREAS, On September 11th, 2001, 2,451 people were killed,
18 including 341 firefighters, and hundreds were injured, during
19 the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York
20 City; in line with their professional duty, hundreds of
21 firefighters rushed into the burning towers to save lives as

1 people evacuated the buildings; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The true bravery of firefighters in America will
3 never be forgotten after the events of September 11th, nor
4 should it ever be, as we continue to honor the spirit,
5 strength, and duty to protect others that our nation's
6 firefighters display every day; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 recognize the day of September 11th as National Firefighters'
10 Day and thank the many men and women of the United States who
11 serve as firefighters and devote themselves to the protection
12 of others at the risk of their own lives day after day; and be
13 it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to David B. Foreman, State Fire Marshal.
