1 HOUSE RESOLUTION

2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the students,
4 staff, and faculty of Franklin School in Belleville on the
5 occasion of being named an Illinois State School of Honor for
6 2008; and

7     WHEREAS, To receive the prestigious Illinois State School
8 of Honor designation, the staff of Franklin School had to
9 submit a 10-page narrative essay about why the school deserves
10 the honor, accompanied by a portfolio with photos and
11 documentation to prove the school's worthiness; impressed by
12 their emphasis on character development, the University of
13 Illinois Extension named Franklin School an Illinois State
14 School of Honor, one of only two schools in the State and the
15 only elementary school to be picked in 2008; and

16     WHEREAS, Franklin School features many character building
17 programs, which include performing tasks that are good for the
18 community outside of school hours, including the planting of
19 flowers for Earth Day and picking up litter on neighborhood
20 pickup days; other tasks include the recitation of a good
21 character pledge every morning in school, which teaches the
22 children tenets of character, such as honesty, perseverance,
23 doing the right thing even without supervision, and being

1 respectful and nice to others; and

2     WHEREAS, The role that Franklin School has played in
3 fostering the values and character of the next generation is
4 paramount in the creation of tomorrow's leaders and ensures
5 that good morals will determine their actions throughout their
6 entire lives; therefore, be it

7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 congratulate the students, staff, and faculty of Franklin
10 School in Belleville on the occasion of being named an Illinois
11 State School of Honor and wish them continued success and
12 happiness in the future; and be it further

13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Franklin School Principal Brian Mentzer as a
15 symbol of our esteem and respect.
