HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, April 13-19, 2008 is National Library Week; and

WHEREAS, The staff of the Helen Matthes Library in Effingham is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the library on April 16, 2008 with a birthday party; and

WHEREAS, The library is also preparing to reach a milestone with close to 100,000 items circulated; and

WHEREAS, On July 31, 1883, the Effingham Ladies Library Association was incorporated by Mrs. Nellie Bliss White; the current library was built in 1956 after making its home in the White Building and then in the City Hall; and

WHEREAS, The library is named after the mother of former mayor of Effingham, Paul Eiche; and

WHEREAS, The library houses over 70,000 items, has eighteen public access computers and four card catalog computers, and holds free computer classes eight times a year in a computer lab donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the staff and patrons of the Helen Matthes Library on this momentous occasion; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Amanda Standerfer, Director of the Helen Matthes Library, as a symbol of our respect.
