HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor those that make a
4 beneficial impact upon our society; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Wolfram Research, Inc. was founded by Stephen
6 Wolfram in 1987; the company, whose world-wide headquarters are
7 based in Champaign, is one of the world's most respected
8 software companies and a powerhouse of scientific and technical
9 innovation; and
 
10     WHEREAS, At the core of Wolfram Research innovative methods
11 is Mathematica, an ever-advancing core product that has
12 launched modern technical computing and has now become the
13 world's most powerful global computation system; first
14 released in 1988, Mathematica now serves millions of dedicated
15 users throughout the technical and educational communities;
16 the Mathematica system is representative of a unique blend of
17 major research breakthroughs, outstanding user-oriented
18 design, and world-class software engineering; as a testament to
19 its utility, Mathematica is used at colleges and universities
20 throughout the world; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Wolfram Research has developed the world's
22 largest free network of technical information websites,

1 including MathWorld, the #1 website devoted to mathematics, and
2 the company's latest major resource, The Wolfram
3 Demonstrations Project; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Wolfram Research's incredible success in the
5 field of computer systems is due to the company's focus on
6 long-term goals while consistently delivering the best
7 possible products and services on an ongoing basis; the company
8 has assembled a team of remarkable breadth and depth over the
9 past two decades, continually attracting outstanding new
10 talent to their uniquely productive intellectual environment;
11 the company also chooses to remain a closely held private
12 company of fewer than 500 employees, which has enabled the
13 company to take a unified approach to a remarkable range of
14 interdisciplinary projects, efficiently develop major
15 innovations, and quickly implement them in their products; and
 
16     WHEREAS, While Mathematica's original impact was felt
17 mainly in the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics,
18 the program has become important in a remarkably wide range of
19 fields, technical and otherwise; Mathematica is currently used
20 throughout the physical, biological, social, and other
21 sciences and counts many of the world's foremost scientists
22 among its enthusiastic supporters; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Wolfram Research serves as a model of integrity

1 and innovation for the people of the State of Illinois;
2 therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5 designate June 23 as "Official Mathematica Day" in the State of
6 Illinois in honor of the 20th anniversary of Wolfram Research,
7 Inc.'s Mathematica program; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to Stephen Wolfram as a symbol of our esteem and
10 respect.
