HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Ed Smith on the occasion of his retirement from the Laborers' International Union of North America after 40 years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, Ed Smith has been a manager of the Midwest Region since 1994; he began his career in 1968 at the age of 13 when he joined Laborers' Local 773 in Cairo; and

WHEREAS, He was elected business manager and secretary-treasurer of the local in 1976, president of the Southern Illinois Laborers' District Council in 1986, business manager in 1990, and served in those positions until 1994; and

WHEREAS, He oversaw some 30 successful organizing campaigns, mainly in the public employee sector; in 1996 he was elected Vice President and Assistant to the General President; and

WHEREAS, Ed Smith serves as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Ed Smith on the occasion of his retirement from the Laborers' International Union of North America and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Ed Smith as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
