HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Helen Franks Lindow was born the 4th day of February, 1935 in Joliet, Illinois to Carol and Lottie Franks, the second of five siblings, sister to Herbert, Betty, Sheldon, and Judy; Helen and her family have been members of Congregation Knesseth Israel (CKI) for over 70 years; at a very early age she had the privilege of learning the Aleph Bet and experienced the teachings of Rebbitzen Twersky serving to instill in her the commitment to Judaism; and

WHEREAS, Helen Lindow is nearly a life-long resident of the City of Marengo and is a member of one of the only practicing Jewish families there, made possible with the support and commitment of her parents and siblings; and

WHEREAS, Helen Doris Franks married Manfred "Lenny" Lindow on March 4, 1956, and together they raised three sons: Edgar, Gene, and Kenneth; and are the proud grandparents of Justin and Adam Pheifer, Danielle, Melissa, and Geoffrey Lindow, and Yehuda, Shimon, Tamima, Sara, and Bracha Lindow; and

WHEREAS, Helen and Manfred Lindow started Lindow's Appliances in 1958 with an inventory of six freezers and have served the community successfully for over 49 years; and

WHEREAS, Helen Lindow has served at CKI as the President of Bnai' Brith women, as a board member of Hadassah and Sisterhood, and is currently the chairperson for "Keepers of the Gate" at Hadassah; and

WHEREAS, Helen Lindow is the current Chairman of the Board of First National Bank of Marengo, having served as a member since its inception in 1974; Helen also helped create the Wonder Lake State Bank in 1979 and has served on the board since then; and she was a founding member of The Bricton Group in 1989, a hotel management company located in four states; and

WHEREAS, Helen Lindow continues to graciously support many organizations, giving of her time, of her talent, and of her treasure to numerous charities including seminaries and children's homes in Marengo, Chicago, and Israel; and

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Helen Lindow of Marengo, in receiving the Teachers Institute for Women of Hebrew Theological College's esteemed Avigayil Award; and

WHEREAS, The Teachers Institute for Women of Hebrew Theological College's members have chosen to call these great efforts to the attention of her fellow citizens, her family, and her friends at a reception in her honor; and

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize Helen Lindow on her numerous accomplishments and for her current recognition as a recipient of the distinguished Avigayil Award; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that Saturday, March 10, 2007 be designated as a day of tribute to honor Helen Lindow, not only for her efforts as a great humanitarian, but also in recognition of her labors and activities on behalf of a score of institutions, agencies, and civic committees; as recipients of the philanthropic works of Helen Lindow, communities have benefited both here and abroad; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Helen Lindow as a symbol of our respect.
