HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Illinois' 72,000 farms utilize more than
3 27,000,000 acres or about 77% of the land area of the State;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, Approximately 90% of agricultural land in
6 Illinois could be used to grow crops; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Illinois generally ranks second in the nation in
8 both corn and soybean production and fourth in hog production;
9 and
 
10     WHEREAS, Illinois' food and fiber industry employs nearly
11 1,500,000 workers, ranking it as one of the top states in
12 dependency on agriculture; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Illinois is a leading state in agricultural
14 related industries, such as soybean processing, meat packing,
15 dairy manufacturing, feed milling, machinery manufacturing,
16 foreign exports, service industries and ethanol production;
17 and
 
18     WHEREAS, Illinois farms produce approximately 17% of the
19 nation's soybeans, 17% of the nation's corn, and 7% of the
20 nation's pigs; and

1     WHEREAS, Illinois farms account for nearly 6% of the
2 nation's agricultural exports; and
 
3     WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize Illinois' farmers
4 and those individuals involved in agricultural related
5 industries that provide our bountiful food supply and economic
6 activity for our citizens and others throughout the world; and
 
7     WHEREAS, March 21, 2007 is National Agriculture Day;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 proclaim March 21, 2007 as Illinois Agriculture Day throughout
12 the State of Illinois in honor of the hard working men and
13 women of Illinois farms and to promote a better understanding
14 of the Illinois agricultural industry and its role in the
15 State's economy.
