HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4 the lives of citizens of the State; and
 
5     WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Clara Pearl
6 Davis of Olney will celebrate her 100th birthday on July 21,
7 2007; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Pearl Davis, as she is known to her friends, was
9 born on July 21, 1907 in Shelbyville, Missouri; she is the
10 second of four children born to Henry and Myrtle Hilbert; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Pearl Davis has experienced
12 many memorable events; she reflects warmly on washing kerosene
13 lamp shades and washing laundry on wash boards as part of her
14 normal chores; she remembers petticoats made from feed sacks
15 and Christmas trees decorated with real candles, as well as
16 playing with dolls with porcelain heads and playing house with
17 her sister Lillian; she still recalls a time when doctors
18 performed house calls; she looks back fondly on summer evenings
19 when friends and neighbors would gather on someone's porch or
20 yard with an old Victrola and sing along with the music,
21 sitting between her father's legs and keeping time with the
22 music; and

1     WHEREAS, After Pearl Davis graduated from high school in
2 Shelbyville, she enrolled in a teachers training course; she
3 worked for a minister and baby-sat to support herself while in
4 training; upon graduation from teachers training she accepted a
5 position teaching grades one through eight in a one room school
6 house; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Pearl Davis met and was courted by her future
8 husband, William J. Davis, of Shelbyville, Missouri around
9 1922; during this time Mr. Davis joined the military; Clara
10 Pearl Hilbert was united in Holy Matrimony to William (Bill)
11 Davis on May 15, 1928; from this holy union three sons were
12 born, Billie Lee, Michael Eugene, and Richard Jesse Davis; and
 
13     WHEREAS, After their marriage, Mr. Davis was transferred to
14 Fort Cook, Nebraska, where Pearl joined him; while stationed at
15 Ft. Cook, Billie Lee and Michael were born; at the start of
16 World War II, Mr. Davis and his family were transferred to Fort
17 Ord, California, where Richard was born; the family lived in
18 many places until Mr. Davis retired from the United States Air
19 Force, when the family moved to Olney; while living in Olney
20 the family joined the First United Methodist Church, remaining
21 there until 1951, when they transferred their church membership
22 to St. Paul United Methodist Church and began co-teaching
23 Sunday School classes, a position Pearl still holds today; and

1     WHEREAS, Pearl Davis is regarded by all who know her to be
2 a loving person and an extremely dedicated Sunday School
3 teacher; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 congratulate Clara Pearl Davis on celebrating this momentous
7 birthday and wish her good health and happiness in the future;
8 and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to Clara Pearl Davis as a symbol of our esteem and
11 respect.
