HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to recognize important events in the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, The Coles County 4-H Auction has been helping young 4-H men and women raise money for fifty years; and

WHEREAS, The first auction was held on July 27, 1957, selling 24 steers of the 4-H members; Louis Christen and John Conerty, both of the Cooperative Extension Service, Mel Lockard, a local banker, and local auctioneers were responsible for organizing the first auction; Mr. Lockard donated a purebred heifer to benefit the 4-H Clubs; and

WHEREAS, In 1962 the auction began selling hogs and sheep; by 1980 six different livestock varieties were being sold at the auction, including beef, swine, sheep, poultry, rabbits, and goats; in 1990 watermelons were added to the many different items people could bid on to help the 4-H Clubs; and

WHEREAS, Each year the volunteer auctioneers, workers, the staff of the University of Illinois Extension office, and others make the auction a success; and

WHEREAS, People have continually bid top dollar for livestock and produce, helping 4-H members to continue learning and growing in Coles County; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coles County 4-H Auction and congratulate the men and women involved in this great venture; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to a representative of the Coles County 4-H Clubs as a symbol of our respect.
