HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Orville Vernon Burton on
4 the occasion of winning the Heartland Prize for Non-Fiction for
5 his book "The Age of Lincoln"; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Orville Vernon Burton is a professor of history
7 and sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
8 and a widely respected author of such books as "In My Father's
9 House Are Many Mansions: Family and Community in Edgefield,
10 South Carolina", published in 1985, and "Computing in the
11 Social Sciences and Humanities", published in 2002; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Orville Vernon Burton's award-winning book "The
13 Age of Lincoln" is an examination of Abraham Lincoln's
14 influence in the creation of a new concept of personal freedom
15 in the United States during the 19th Century; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Orville Vernon Burton has won many accolades from
17 a wide array of scholars for his book "The Age of Lincoln";
18 such scholars include Lincoln biographer David Herbert Donald,
19 who has stated that Burton "shows how Lincoln's ideas, so
20 essential for Northern victory in the war, affected the way
21 Americans defined themselves in the postwar generation"; and

1     WHEREAS, Orville Vernon Burton will receive The Heartland
2 Prize for Non-Fiction on Sunday, November 4 at a ceremony
3 during the Chicago Humanities Festival; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 congratulate Orville Vernon Burton on the occasion of winning
7 the Heartland Prize for Non-Fiction and wish him continued
8 success and happiness in the future; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to Orville Vernon Burton as a symbol of our esteem
11 and respect.
