HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois wish to congratulate the Urbana Park District on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, The Urbana Park District is 7th oldest district in the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, In celebration of the anniversary, in October 2007 a week-long celebration known as a Chautauqua will be recreated; previous Chautauquas were cultural, spiritual, political, and educational events held each year at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana from the late 1800s to the mid 1920s; they included such speakers as William Jennings Bryan, Helen Keller, Jane Addams, and Booker T. Washington; and

WHEREAS, The first Chautauqua in Champaign-Urbana was held at West Side Park in August of 1894; it moved to Crystal Lake Park in August of 1896 and became known as the Twin City Chautauqua; by 1909 more than 5,000 people were attending the Twin City Chautauqua each year; and

WHEREAS, The citizens have chosen the theme Community Values for the event-aiming to showcase the vibrant community that is Urbana (and its companion (twin) city, Champaign); entertainment and activities in the areas of children and family, faith and religion, politics, arts, and natural history are planned; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Urbana Park District on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Urbana Park District.
