SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Leonard Szczepanek of Waukegan, who passed away on December 20, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek was born on January 1, 1921 in North Chicago; his parents were Stanley and Rose Szczepanek; he married Bette Halford on August 30, 1947; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1940; after, graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and was placed with Company G 381 of the 96th Infantry Division; during World War II, he was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant after being shot in the Philippines, receiving the Purple Heart for his wounds; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek was employed at Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago, where he later retired; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek was a member of the Waukegan Merchant Football Team, The Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion Post 0771 of Gurnee, and Immaculate Conception Church in Waukegan; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek enjoyed bowling and watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and his sisters, Rose, Virginia, Georgia, and Blanch; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Szczepanek is survived by his daughter, Carol (Tom) Schwab; his grandchildren, Michael (fiancee Kathryn) Schwab, Jason (Amy) Schwab, and Shannon (special friend Ken Totten) Schwab; his great-grandchildren, Tyler Schwab, Austin Schwab, Hunter Schwab, Jaxon Schwab, and Addison Schwab; and his sisters, Bernice (Al) Wiggins and Therese (Bob) Deisinger; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Leonard Szczepanek; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Leonard Szczepanek as an expression of our sympathy.
