SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Nick Maggos of Alton, who passed away on
4 May 8, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The death of Nick Maggos marked the passing of one
6 of Alton's leading businessmen from an earlier, brighter era in
7 Alton's history; for almost 30 years, from the 1960s until the
8 early 1990s, Mr. Maggos was active in every significant Alton
9 community activity; his activities included being president of
10 the Greater Alton Chamber of Commerce, president and co-founder
11 of Pride Inc., president of the Alton YMCA, chairman of the
12 United Way Campaign, member of the boards of the Alton Museum
13 of History and Art, Hayner Public Library, Family Service
14 Visiting Nurse Association, and an adviser to Lewis and Clark
15 Community College, along with Rod St. Clair and Robert
16 Schrimpf; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He was vice president of the Center for American
18 Archeology, member of the World Business Council, chairman of
19 the Alton Memorial Hospital Foundation, chairman of the 1990
20 Easter Seal Campaign, director of the Center for Global
21 Activities, and adjunct professor at LCCC and president of the
22 LCCC Foundation; and

1     WHEREAS, Nick Maggos was born April 9, 1929, to the late
2 Gust and Mary (Davis) Maggos; he was raised in Alton, and
3 attended Western Military Academy and Washington University in
4 St. Louis; he was the owner and head of the Pepsi-Cola Alton
5 Bottling Company until its sale in 1989, and was active in and
6 an officer of several national soft drink trade associations;
7 Nick's father, Gust Maggos, entered the beer business in Alton
8 at the end of Prohibition and introduced Pepsi Cola to the
9 Alton market in 1935; this event eventually grew into the Alton
10 Pepsi Bottling Company, which was located on East Broadway in
11 Alton; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was the recipient of numerous awards, including
13 the Pride Medal of Achievement, the Chamber of Commerce
14 president's Award, and the Guardian Award presented by the
15 Alton Museum of History and Art; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He leaves behind his wife, Barbara, of 39 years;
17 his two daughters, Colleen and Suzy; three grand-children, John
18 David and his wife, Ann Graziano, and Allison and Michael Dash;
19 therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22 his family and friends, the passing of Nick Maggos; and be it
23 further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Nick Maggos as a symbol of our
3 sincere sympathy.
