HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to veterans who have served
4their country and the State of Illinois; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Wilbur E. Troehler was born in the
6small farming town of Fairbury to parents Grover C. and Aline
7Troehler on March 3, 1916; he married Ruth M. Urban on February
821, 1941, and they settled in Chicago, where they had three
9sons, Eugene, William, and Robert; and
 
10    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler was inducted into the United States
11Army at Gary, Indiana on March 23, 1943; he received his basic
12training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced
13individual training at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky; upon
14completion of training, he was assigned to the 75th Infantry
15Division and further assigned to Company D, 289th Infantry
16Regiment; the 75th Infantry Division was activated April 15,
171943 and deployed overseas on November 14, 1944; and
 
18    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler entered combat as a Heavy Weapons
19NCO and Section Leader under the 75th Infantry Division on
20Christmas Day 1944 in the Ardennes Counter Offensive, later
21known as the Battle of the Bulge; and

1    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler returned to the U.S. in April 1945
2after marching through England, France, Belgium, and
3Luxemburg; and
 
4    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received numerous medals, including
5the Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, the
6European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War
7II Victory Medal, and the Army Occupation Medal; and
 
8    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler received the Combat Infantry Badge,
9the Expert Infantry Badge, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge;
10he was also given the Honorable Service Lapel Button; and
 
11    WHEREAS, SSG Troehler passed away on April 13, 1989 in
12Chicago; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
15SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate U.S. Route 24 as
16it travels through Fairbury as the "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler
17Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
19is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
20State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
21giving notice of the name "SSG Wilbur E. Troehler Memorial

1Highway"; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
3presented to the family of SSG Troehler, the Mayor of
4Fairbury, and the Secretary of Transportation.
