SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Robert Lee Smarjesse of Springfield, who passed away on April 10, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smarjesse was born in Springfield to John and Catherine Rose Smarjesse on November 15, 1935; he was drafted twice in to the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962; he married Myrtle Gough in Malibu, California on October 21, 1961; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smarjesse served as superintendent of the Sangamon County Veterans Assistance Commission, retiring in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smarjesse was a member of American Legion Post 32 and Disabled American Veterans; he was an avid golfer and Chicago Cubs fan; he was a previous boxer, an excellent bowler, and a shuffleboard and pool player; as a young man, he even beat the legendary Minnesota Fats; he was a loving and caring person to everyone he met; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smarjesse was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle; his parents; and his brother, Louis; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smarjesse is survived by his children, Tony (Debbie) Smarjesse, Teri (Joe) Mulvey, and Tami (Alan) Savage; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Robert Lee Smarjesse and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Robert Smarjesse as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
