HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, MRSA is an acronym for methicillin-resistant
3 staphylococcus aureus, also known as the "superbug"; MRSA can
4 cause deadly infections in patients in healthcare facilities
5 and within our communities; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
7 (CDC) have estimated that hospital-acquired MRSA infections
8 alone killed more than 100,000 U.S. residents in 2006; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Consumers Advancing Patient Safety (CAPS), among
10 many other leading consumer healthcare organizations and
11 patient advocates around the globe, are lending their voices to
12 the call of world unity in leadership and commitment in
13 preventing and stopping MRSA, which is pandemic and rising at
14 alarming rates within healthcare facilities and in our
15 communities; the groups also call upon healthcare officials and
16 leaders to step up and take a more comprehensive approach to
17 eradicate this preventable disease and focus on a broad and
18 pro-active prevention program; and
 
19     WHEREAS, As an integral part of its multi-faceted program,
20 the MRSA Survivors Network, the first consumer organization in
21 the U.S. to raise the alarm concerning the MRSA epidemic and
22 other multi-drug resistant healthcare-acquired infections, has

1 announced "World MRSA Day", which will be held on October 2,
2 2009 and commemorated each year after on this date; in
3 addition, the month of October will also be designated "MRSA
4 Awareness Month" in order to call attention to this worldwide
5 epidemic; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 designate October 2, 2009 as "World MRSA Day" in the State of
9 Illinois; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the MRSA Survivors Network as a symbol of our
12 dedication to the fight against this epidemic.
