HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Katie Washington
4 of Gary, Indiana on the occasion of being the first
5 African-American valedictorian at the University of Notre Dame
6 and for achieving a 4.0 grade point average; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Katie Washington majored in biological science
8 with a minor in Catholic social teaching at Notre Dame; she was
9 the valedictorian of her class at West Side High School in
10 Gary, Indiana in 2006; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Katie Washington has conducted research on lung
12 cancer at the Cold Springs Harbor labs and performed genetic
13 studies in the university's Eck Institute for Global Health on
14 the mosquito that carries dengue and yellow fever; she is the
15 co-author of a research paper regarding the ways that
16 mosquitoes that carry dengue and yellow fever transmit
17 infection and disease in Haiti with David Severson, a professor
18 of biological sciences; and
 
19     WHEREAS, As a result of her stellar performance, Katie
20 Washington has been accepted at 5 different universities,
21 including Harvard University, and has been awarded a full
22 scholarship and a stipend for housing and living expenses; she

1 plans to pursue a joint M.D./Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University
2 while training as a physician scientist with the intention of
3 treating patients with various diseases; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Katie Washington's family, which includes her
5 parents, William Washington and Jean Tomlin, her brothers, Mark
6 and Vincent, and her sister, Terry, are all undoubtedly proud
7 of Katie and her many accomplishments; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10 congratulate Katie Washington for her many accomplishments and
11 wish her continued success and happiness in the future; and be
12 it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Katie Washington as a symbol of our esteem and
15 respect.
