HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of the
4 Village of Shannon on the village sesquicentennial; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Village of Shannon is celebrating its
6 sesquicentennial this year, 2010; Shannon sits in the
7 northeastern corner of Carroll County, which is in the
8 northwestern part of the State; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Village was founded in 1860 by William
10 Shannon; he and Elijah Northey were instrumental in getting the
11 Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroads to go through
12 Shannon, which greatly helped the growth of the town; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Shannon was surrounded by thriving family farms
14 and the Village met their needs with a variety of businesses;
15 today, Shannon is a community of about 850 people; it is still
16 surrounded by farm land but the small family farms of the past
17 are no longer there; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Shannon is a small community trying to find its
19 way in the 21st century; like so many other rural communities,
20 the peace and quiet of the Village offers a wonderful place to
21 live and raise children; and

1     WHEREAS, Shannon will have its annual Homecoming
2 celebration and will commemorate the Village sesquicentennial
3 on Labor Day weekend, September 4, 5, and 6, 2010; the
4 celebration was started for the men and boys returning home
5 from World War I; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate the citizens of Shannon and wish them the best in
9 this sesquicentennial year; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Bonnie Heckman Foust, Shannon Village President,
12 as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
