HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of the Village of Shannon on the village sesquicentennial; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Shannon is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year, 2010; Shannon sits in the northeastern corner of Carroll County, which is in the northwestern part of the State; and

WHEREAS, The Village was founded in 1860 by William Shannon; he and Elijah Northey were instrumental in getting the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroads to go through Shannon, which greatly helped the growth of the town; and

WHEREAS, Shannon was surrounded by thriving family farms and the Village met their needs with a variety of businesses; today, Shannon is a community of about 850 people; it is still surrounded by farm land but the small family farms of the past are no longer there; and

WHEREAS, Shannon is a small community trying to find its way in the 21st century; like so many other rural communities, the peace and quiet of the Village offers a wonderful place to live and raise children; and

WHEREAS, Shannon will have its annual Homecoming celebration and will commemorate the Village sesquicentennial on Labor Day weekend, September 4, 5, and 6, 2010; the celebration was started for the men and boys returning home from World War I; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of Shannon and wish them the best in this sesquicentennial year; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Bonnie Heckman Foust, Shannon Village President, as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
