HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize State Representative
4Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi for her years of service and hard work on
5behalf of the people of the State of Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi was first elected in 1998 to
7serve the people of the 54th District, which includes portions
8of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Inverness,
9Palatine, and Rolling Meadows; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi taught English and French
11for 10 years before retiring to raise a family and being
12elected to the District 15 Board of Education; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi has received numerous awards
14throughout her years of service, including Legislator of the
15Year from the Suburban Area Agency on Aging, being named the
16Champion of Free Enterprise by the Illinois Chamber of
17Commerce, and being named a Friend of Agriculture by the
18Illinois Farm Bureau; in addition, she was also awarded a
19fellowship to the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership
20Development; and
 
21    WHEREAS, During her freshman legislative year she had the

1opportunity to serve as a member of the United States Trade
2Mission to the Republic of South Africa, where she participated
3in the opening of the new Illinois Trade Office in
4Johannesburg, South Africa; and
 
5    WHEREAS, There is no denying Representative Bassi, known
6for her poker face, is passionate about good public policy; she
7fought diligently against unfunded school mandates and
8frequently read the litany of classroom responsibilities of
9public school teachers such as teaching the "Three B's",
10broccoli, bladder control, and bullying, in addition to
11teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi fought for mass transit
13improvements; downsized government through CMAP; school
14violence prevention; crackdown on gun violence; increased
15penalties for sex offenders and drug users; increased funding
16for local schools; expanded pharmaceutical coverage through
17the Circuit Breaker/IL Rx programs; increased permit and
18inspection regulations for carnival and amusement rides; and
19provided GPS tracking for victims of domestic violence through
20the Cindy Bischof Law; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi was one of nine Republicans
22to serve on the 21-member House Special Investigative Committee
23to Impeach former Governor Rod Blagojevich; and

1    WHEREAS, She served as the Republican spokesperson for
2Elementary & Secondary Education, Tourism & Conventions,
3Infrastructure, and Appropriations-Elementary & Secondary
4Education House committees; and she served as a member of the
5Mass Transit, Revenue and Finance, Minority Procurement, and
6State Government Administration committees; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi is an active member of the
8Conference of Women Legislators, a member of the Task Force on
9Alzheimer's, and the Task Force on Re-Enrolling High School
10Drop-outs; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi grew up in Omaha, Nebraska,
12and later lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated from
13St. Joseph's High School in 1962; she received her Bachelor of
14Arts degree from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in
15River Forest, in 1966; and completed her MAT at the University
16of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1973; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Representative Bassi and her husband, Roger, have
18three children, Carrie, Steve, and Greg; and two grandsons;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1congratulate Representative Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi on her
2retirement from the Illinois House of Representatives and wish
3her the best in her future endeavors; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to State Representative Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi as a
6symbol of our respect and esteem.
