HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate John P. Meschi of Lombard on the occasion of being named the December 2010 Illinois Veteran of the Month by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Veteran of the Month award is given by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs to veterans who contribute to the betterment of communities throughout the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, John Meschi served in the United States Marine Corps for 6 years; during his service, he served as a military policeman in the Philippines; he then served in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis; he subsequently served in an infantry company at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, followed by a return to Cuba; toward the end of his tour, he served with an artillery unit as a driver; he then spent the last few months of service back at Camp Lejeune, where he served as a vehicle instructor; and

WHEREAS, John Meschi has been a member of the Marine Corps League for 24 years; he has served as Chairman of the group's Fundraising committee and is instrumental in the execution of the League's many fundraising efforts; he also serves as the Veterans' Assistance Officer for his detachment and helps to organize many of the organization's charity events, such as monthly parties at the Hines V.A. Hospital and DuPage County Convalescent Center, Eagle Scout ceremonies, and food delivery programs; and

WHEREAS, John Meschi served as Chairman of the Marine Corps League's Toys-for-Tots committee for 12 years; during that time, annual toy collections rose from 3,000 to a high of 100,000; he also spoke at numerous gatherings of donators and arranged numerous appearances of Reserve Marines for the program; he is also involved with the Sharing Connection, a local charity group that distributes toys in the Chicago area; and

WHEREAS, John Meschi was designated Marine of the Year by the Marine Corps League in 1996 and 2001; and

WHEREAS, John Meschi serves as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate John P. Meschi on the occasion of being named the December 2010 Illinois Veteran of the Month and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John Meschi as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
