HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. David S. Fox of Chicago on April 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, He was born on March 13, 1922 in Chicago; he graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1938; and

WHEREAS, He continued in the family tradition by attending Haverford College, his mother having "enrolled" him at the tender age of five; and

WHEREAS, He was encouraged, as were his brothers before him, to write letters home that his parents kept for a record of his college experiences; he and his wife, in turn, encouraged their children to do the same; although their children sent very few letters, they did stay in touch through plenty of calls which resulted in exceedingly high telephone bills; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from Haverford, Dr. Fox earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, He served his medical internship in the United States Navy, serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island, before entering World War II; during the war, he served as a physician aboard troop transport ships from the West Coast to the Pacific Theater; and

WHEREAS, After World War II, Dr. Fox established a surgical practice in Hyde park at Woodlawn Hospital in 1949; and

WHEREAS, He was president of the Illinois Medical Society from 1978 to 1979; president of the Chicago Medical Society from 1975 to 1976; and was medical director and director of medical education from 1979 to 1986 at Woodlawn Hospital; and

WHEREAS, He also had general surgery practices at Bethany and Hyde Park Hospitals from 1986 until 1995; he was vice president and medical director of Medical Cost Management Corporation, providing services and programs for health care plans; he served as chairman of the State medical practice examining committee of the Illinois Department of Registration and Education from 1981 to 1986; and he was a past director of the Illinois Foundation for Medical Review; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fox is remembered as a kind man who cared about his patients, treating their medical symptoms in the context of the whole person; he had an easy and comfortable way about him that showed he truly enjoyed his colleagues, his friends, and his patients; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fox was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie (nee Kelly) and his daughter, Stephanie; and

WHEREAS, Dr. David S. Fox is survived by his sons, Andrew (Patricia), David Jr. (Janet), Brian (Jan), Dr. John (Monica), and Paul (Nancy); his ten grandchildren; his great-grandchild; and his son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Ward; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family, friends, and people whose lives he touched throughout the years, the passing of Dr. David S. Fox; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. David S. Fox as a symbol of our sincere sympathy and esteem.
