HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Winston Kennedy, consummate Hyde Parker for more than 50 years, on February 1, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Win began his working career as a resident manager with the Chicago Housing Authority; he lived in the same housing project in which he worked, LeClaire Courts, which was one of the first integrated housing projects in the country; and

WHEREAS, In 1967, after 11 years in the University of Chicago real estate development department, Mr. Kennedy and two associates founded the real estate firm Century 21 Kennedy, Ryan, Monigal & Associates, Inc.; they specialized in the unique buildings of Hyde Park and the surrounding neighborhoods for more than 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Win, using his real estate knowledge, committed himself to preserving the integrity of more than 25 of Hyde Park's buildings in the 1970s through condominium conversions; and

WHEREAS, Win was a devoted member of Kiwanis for more than 50 years; he worked with the service organization to support neighborhood institutions and combat the many problems facing South Side youth; through Kiwanis, he was also able to provide service and support to other community organizations for which he cared deeply, such as the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, a camp for disabled children, and the 57th Street Children's Book Fair; and

WHEREAS, Win served on the boards of several neighborhood organizations, including the Hyde Park Historical Society, Blue Gargoyle Community Services, and the Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference; he also served on the boards of the former Hyde Park Co-Op and the former Hyde Park YMCA; and

WHEREAS, Win believed that the way in which one conducted business was just as important as the profit; he always expected relationships to outlast business deals and conducted himself accordingly; he believed that if one made money in a community, there was a responsibility to give back to that community; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Winston Kennedy will be deeply felt by his wife, Margaret; his four children, Patricia, Pamela, Thomas, and Robert; his seven grandchildren, Devon, Kyle, Ashleigh, Cory, Cameron, Lena, and Tatiana; his sister, June Fellows; his brother, Wayne; and the whole of the Hyde Park and Kenwood communities; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Winston Kennedy; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Winston Kennedy as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
