SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Russell Hudlin of East St. Louis, who passed away on June 21, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin was born on November 17, 1928 in Hot Springs, Arkansas; he was an alumnus of Lincoln High School of East St. Louis and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin served his country with pride and distinction as a lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin was employed as a pharmacist; he was also a long-time businessman, owning and operating retail stores in both East St. Louis and Centreville for 50-plus years before his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin was an active member of his community; he was an active participant on numerous not-for-profit boards, including St. Mary's Hospital and the Jefferson National Park Expansion boards; he was also a past president of both the East St. Louis Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of East St. Louis; he was a steadfast defender of his city and always looked for ways to positively impact the quality of life in his community; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin was an avid hockey fan and a long-time St. Louis Blues season ticket holder; he was also an experienced stone mason, a craft he learned from his father and passed onto his sons; he also enjoyed building structures of stone and marble, spending time with his family, and traveling; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin was preceded in death by his father, Edward Warrington Hudlin; his mother, Myrtle Hudlin; his sister, Lucille McClelland, Ph.D.; and his brothers, Warrington Hudlin and Lt. Col. Irving C. Hudlin, Ph.D.; and

WHEREAS, Russell Hudlin is survived by his wife, Jeto Hudlin; his children, Russell C. Hudlin Jr., Gerald D. (Ella) Hudlin, and Katheryn M. Shoubaki; his grandchildren, Darrell Conner, Shaadi Shoubaki, and Audrey Hudlin, his great-grandchild, Cierra Mitchell; and his brothers, Edward (Helen) Hudlin, Ph.D. and Richard Hudlin; his brother-in-law, Harbans Manhas; his sister-in-law, Jaswant (Surbjeet) Gandhi; and his many other family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Russell Hudlin; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Russell Hudlin as an expression of our sympathy.
