SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Over 42,000 people will be diagnosed with
3 pancreatic cancer this year in the United States and over
4 35,000 will die from the disease; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest cancer and the
6 fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Approximately 1,600 deaths will occur in
8 Illinois; and
 
9     WHEREAS, 76 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die
10 within the first year of their diagnosis and 95 percent of
11 pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; and
 
12     WHEREAS, There is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there
13 have been no significant improvements in early detection,
14 treatment methods, or survival rates in the last 30 years; and
 
15     WHEREAS, When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present
16 themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis,
17 and the average life expectancy of those diagnosed with
18 metastasis disease is only three to six months; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Incidents of pancreatic cancer are approximately

1 50 percent higher in African-Americans than in other ethnic
2 groups; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The federal government invests less money in
4 pancreatic cancer research than it does in any of the other
5 leading cancer killers; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of
7 Illinois are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness
8 about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection,
9 causes, and effective treatments; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the first
11 and only national patient advocacy organization that serves the
12 pancreatic cancer community in Illinois and nationwide by
13 focusing its efforts on public policy, research funding,
14 patient services, and public awareness and education related to
15 developing effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic
16 cancer; and
 
17     WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its
18 affiliates in Illinois support those patients currently
19 battling pancreatic cancer, as well as to those who have lost
20 their lives to the disease, and are committed to nothing less
21 than a cure; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the Illinois Senate
3 designate the month of November, 2009 "Pancreatic Cancer
4 Awareness Month" in the State of Illinois.
