SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Many places in Illinois are significant sites of
3 local, State, national, and world history; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Illinois residents and visitors coming to these
5 sites may learn about historic people, ideas, and developments
6 there; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Such visits may deepen their interests in, and
8 appreciation of, history; and
 
9     WHEREAS, History can help them understand their place in
10 the world and how they might improve it; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Increasing visitations at historic sites
12 stimulate beautification, preservation, conservation, tourism,
13 and business in Illinois communities and counties where they
14 are located; and
 
15     WHEREAS, The Illinois State Historical Society, recognized
16 by the Illinois General Assembly in 1903, has already placed
17 markers at more than 400 historic sites around the State; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly and the Illinois
19 State Historical Society now seek to heighten historical

1 awareness in Illinois residents and visitors by calling
2 attention to these markers and historic sites throughout the
3 State; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the week of March 1-7,
6 2010 shall be known as Illinois State Historical Society
7 Markers Awareness Week; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That we encourage all Illinois residents and
9 visitors to celebrate this week by learning about historic
10 sites in their locales, visiting them, reflecting on their
11 importance in history, communicating with others about them,
12 and attending ceremonies commemorating them; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That the members of the Illinois Senate are
14 encouraged to participate in the events of this week with their
15 colleagues in the Capitol and their constituents in their home
16 districts.
