SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of James Robert "J.R." Phillip Sr., of Westmont and formerly of Hinsdale, who passed away on June 22, 2010; and

WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago on July 8, 1925 to James A. and Helen Phillip; he was a navigator in the United States Air Force during World War II; he graduated from Northwestern University with a commerce degree; and

WHEREAS, After graduation he joined his parents' flower business, Phillip's Flowers & Gifts, founded in Cicero, in 1923, where he remained actively involved for 61 years, serving as Chairman Emeritus until his passing; and

WHEREAS, He was a co-founder and director of the Bank of LaGrange Park, a co-founder of the Metro Chicago Florist Delivery Co-op, and a member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF); and

WHEREAS, He was a man of faith and family, and was also a longtime member and past elder of Christ Church of Oak Brook; and

WHEREAS, James Robert "J.R." Phillip Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary B. Phillip; his sister, Lee Phillip Bell; his brother and business colleague, Russell Phillip; his children, Jim (Gwen), Don (Sandy), and Baxter (Martha) Phillip; his eight grandchildren; and his one great-grandson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of James Phillip Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James Phillip Sr. as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
