SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Claire Nabors McLendon; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon was born to Charles James Nabors
5and Melissa Denola Nabors in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18, 1935;
6she was raised in Cleveland and graduated from John Adams High
7School in 1953; as a teen, she attended The Music Settlement in
8Cleveland, where she studied Dalcroze Eurhythmics, music
9theory, and the flute; she also began gardening a plot of land
10at the Harvey Rice School Garden, becoming an experimental
11gardener and a student assistant; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon earned her Bachelor of Science in
13Education from Ohio University in 1957, where she joined a
14local sorority; following graduation, she joined Alpha Kappa
15Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Case Western Reserve University, the
16first AKA graduate chapter in the sorority's history; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon met her future husband, Frederick
18Earl McLendon Jr., while teaching third grade at Paul Revere
19Elementary School in Cleveland; after they married, they made
20their home in Chicago and raised their sons, Eric and Craig;

1    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon continued her teaching career at
2Shoesmith Elementary School in Chicago, where she spent 34
3years as a learning disabilities teacher, counselor, and
4assistant principal; through hard work and perseverance, and
5after becoming a single mother, she furthered her education,
6earning a Master of Education in Counseling and also in
7Administration and Supervision, as well as a principal
8certificate; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon served as president of Chums,
10Inc., as secretary of the Chicago Chapter of Jack and Jill of
11America, Inc., and as a member of the Afro-American
12Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago; she formed
13many meaningful and lasting friendships while studying
14genealogy, and her unmatched love for genealogy resulted in
15tracing her family back for six generations; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Claire McLendon was a mother, musician, gardener,
17seamstress, and genealogist; she will be remembered as a
18gracious, intelligent, caring, funny, and generous woman whose
19fruitcakes and brownies were enjoyed by many; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Claire Nabors McLendon and extend our sincere condolences to
23her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it

4our deepest sympathy.
