SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/12-502  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-502

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that on and after the 180th day after the effective date of the amendatory Act, every vehicle which has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or Gross Combination Weight Rating in excess of 26,000 pounds and a conventional cab configuration in which more than half of the engine length is forward of the foremost point of the windshield base and steering wheel bug in the forward quarter of the vehicle length shall, whenever operated either singly or in combination on highways other than controlled-access highways, be equipped with a convex mirror on the front of the vehicle. Provides that when the vehicle or combination is being operated, the mirror shall be adjusted so as to enable the operator to see all points on the imaginary horizontal line which extends the full width of the front of the vehicle and is 3 feet above the road and one foot directly forward from the midpoint of the front of the vehicle. Provides that the new provisions are inoperative if any federal agency or court of competent jurisdiction makes a final determination that the new provisions would render the State ineligible for the receipt of federal funds. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5Section 12-502 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/12-502)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-502)
7    Sec. 12-502. Mirrors.
8    (a) Every motor vehicle, operated singly or when towing
9another vehicle, shall be equipped with a mirror so located as
10to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance
11of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.
12    (b) On and after the 180th day after the effective date of
13this amendatory Act of the 97th General Assembly, every vehicle
14registered in this State which has a Gross Vehicle Weight
15Rating or Gross Combination Weight Rating in excess of 26,000
16pounds and a conventional cab configuration in which more than
17half of the engine length is forward of the foremost point of
18the windshield base and steering wheel bug in the forward
19quarter of the vehicle length shall, whenever operated either
20singly or in combination on highways other than
21controlled-access highways, be equipped with a convex mirror on
22the front of the vehicle. When the vehicle or combination is

1adjusted so as to enable the operator to see all points on the

4vehicle or combination, and extends the full width of the front

6    The provisions of this subsection (b), other than this
7sentence, are inoperative if any federal agency or court of
8competent jurisdiction makes a final determination that this
9subsection (b) would render the State ineligible for the
10receipt of federal funds.

12    Section 97. Severability. The provisions of this Act are
13severable under Section 1.31 of the Statute on Statutes.
 
14    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
15becoming law.
