SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Clinton Craig Atkins of Naples, Florida,
4formerly of Champaign, who passed away on April 24, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins was born on June 12, 1945, in
6Sewickley, Pennsylvania; he was the son of Clinton Paul and
7Maxine Long Atkins; he married Susan A. Stitt on November 2,
81963; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins received his high school diploma
10from Champaign Central High School in 1963; he subsequently
11attended the University of Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins began working at The News-Gazette
13in Champaign in 1964 in the circulation department; he enjoyed
14working with the youth of the community and the departments to
15get the paper out on time; after retiring at the age of 30, he
16had acquired several properties in Champaign and the
17surrounding communities; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins returned to work in 1981, when he
19acquired the Westgate Apartments and the chain of liquor stores
20in the Twin Cities; he subsequently acquired Tower Hobbies,
21Herr's, Great Plains, numerous warehouses, and other real

1estate; he was also the co-founder of the Plastic Container
2Corporation; in the 1990s, he developed North Prospect Avenue,
3including Baytowne Apartments, the Square, and the Shoppes; ten
4years later, he developed the Stone Creek Golf Course,
5Subdivision, Commons, and Shoppes in southeast Urbana; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins' desire was to make
7Champaign-Urbana the best it could be through creating jobs,
8providing housing, philanthropy through various charities, and
9promoting the arts, education, and athletics at the University
10of Illinois; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins was preceded in death by his
12parents, Clinton Paul and Maxine L. Atkins; his grandson, Zane;
13and his nephew, Clinton Paul; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Clinton Atkins is survived by his loving wife,
15Susie; his children, Suzette (Michael) Hogan, C. Todd (Julia)
16Atkins, and Spencer (Tracy) Atkins; his grandchildren, Amber
17(Travis) Geralds, Kathryne, Emily, Nolan, Alexis, Spencer Von,
18Olivia, Victoria, Isabella, and George; his brother, Vincent
19(Inge) Atkins; his sister, Mary (Ivan) Hassinger; his
20sister-in-law, Donna Harris; and his many loving nieces and
21nephews and their families; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
2his family and friends, the death of Clinton Craig Atkins; and
3be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Clinton Atkins as an expression of
6our sympathy.
