SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gary Shannon Upton of Bloomington, who passed away August 24, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Gary Upton was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Mollie Day and Myles Upton on May 24, 1943; and

WHEREAS, A proud member of the United States Army and a Vietnam War veteran, Gary Upton retired from the Army as a first sergeant in 1985 after 24 years of service; after his career in the Army, Gary Upton served as a deputy sheriff and worked for the United States Army Finance Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and the United States Army Distribution and Publications Center in St Louis, Missouri; he officially retired in 2006; and

WHEREAS, Gary Upton was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals; he was a quiet man who enjoyed spending time with family and going out for coffee at his "home away from home", Shannon's Five Star Restaurant; and

WHEREAS, Gary Upton was preceded in death by his parents and multiple siblings; and

WHEREAS, Gary Upton is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darla Jean Upton; his daughters, Jodi Upton Hicks (Sam Howard) and Jennifer Upton Galanti (Paul); his sons, Scott Upton (Laurie) and Kevin Schaefer (Rebecca); his grandchildren, Peyton Hicks, Justin, Austin, and Miles Upton, and Carson Schaefer; and his step-grandchildren, Jonathan, Brandon, and Celia Galanti; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Gary Shannon Upton and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gary Upton as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
