| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Senior Pastor James and | 4 | | First Lady Corliss Moody on their retirement from serving as | 5 | | Senior Pastor and First Lady of the Quinn Chapel AME Church; | 6 | | and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Quinn Chapel is the oldest African American | 8 | | Church in the City of Chicago; it was founded in 1844 and | 9 | | incorporated in 1847 which was just ten years after the | 10 | | incorporation of the City of Chicago; in 1891, it purchased | 11 | | the land at its current site at 2401 Wabash Ave, and a group of | 12 | | African Americans designed and built the church structure that | 13 | | stands today; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The Quinn Chapel AME church building was | 15 | | designated a Chicago Landmark in 1977 and added to the | 16 | | National Registry of Historic Places in 1979; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Quinn Chapel was instrumental in the founding of | 18 | | Provident Hospital and Elm House; historically, the church has | 19 | | been and continues to be an influential voice of empowerment | 20 | | and change in the City of Chicago; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has been a pastor for 39 years; in |

| 1 | | 2002, he became Senior Pastor of Quinn Chapel African | 2 | | Methodist Episcopal Church, Chicago; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Along with Pastor Moody's many roles and | 4 | | responsibilities as Senior Pastor, he embarked on developing | 5 | | partnerships to restore the church structure befitting its | 6 | | historical prominence; he leaves a tireless legacy of | 7 | | restoration of lives and structures; he has been a community | 8 | | activist and a voice for those who had none, fighting for | 9 | | justice for all; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has worked in the local community, | 11 | | the community at large, the City of Chicago, and beyond to | 12 | | fulfill the mission of the AME church which is "to minister to | 13 | | the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and | 14 | | environmental needs of all people"; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has been a representative of the | 16 | | ongoing fight for civil rights and social justice in this | 17 | | country; he continues to uplift the underserved and to educate | 18 | | throughout all his endeavors by seeking out and saving the | 19 | | lost and serving the needy; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Because of Pastor Moody's commitment to service, | 21 | | he has opened the church doors to all that needed a helping | 22 | | hand; he is a man of distinction and honor and has given much |

| 1 | | of himself to lift the welfare of others; therefore, be it
| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 3 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 4 | | we wish to congratulate Senior Pastor James and First Lady | 5 | | Corliss Moody on their retirement from serving as Senior | 6 | | Pastor and First Lady of the Quinn Chapel AME Church and wish | 7 | | them luck in all their future endeavors; and be it further
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be sent | 9 | | to Pastor James and First Lady Corliss Moody and the Quinn | 10 | | Chapel AME Church as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
