1    AN ACT concerning health.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Child Vision and Hearing Test Act is amended
5by adding Section 5.5 as follows:
 
6    (410 ILCS 205/5.5 new)
7    Sec. 5.5. Auditory-visual integration assessment pilot
8program. In addition to the program of hearing screening
9services and the program of vision screening services
10established by the Department under this Act, the Department,
11in consultation with the State Board of Education, shall
12establish an auditory-visual integration assessment pilot
13program in selected school districts in the northern region of
14the State, to be determined by the State Board of Education.
15The pilot program shall do the following:
16        (1) Require each pupil in the selected school districts
17    in those grade levels where visual screening is required to
18    undergo a base-level auditory-visual integration
19    screening, which shall be a pass-or-fail spatial
20    localization test.
21        (2) Require a more detailed evaluation of students who
22    fail the base-level auditory-visual integration screening.
23    This level of assessment shall include quantitative and

1    qualitative measurements of both auditory-visual
2    integration function and spatial navigation ability and
3    shall result in specific recommendations for interventions
4    that may be needed.
5        (3) Provide a training program for qualified
6    individuals on how to conduct in-school base-level
7    auditory-visual integration screenings.
8        (4) Provide a training program for occupational
9    therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists,
10    optometrists, and community health clinic professionals
11    throughout the State to perform detailed evaluations.
12        (5) Provide training for optometrists throughout the
13    State to prescribe appropriate interventions.
14    The Department and the State Board of Education shall adopt
15rules to implement this Section.
 
16    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
17becoming law.
