HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that we pay honor and respect
3to the truly great individuals who have served our country, and
4in doing so, have gone above and beyond the call of duty to
5make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Major Reid B. Nannen of Hopedale passed away on
7March 1, 2014 due to injuries sustained while training at
8TOPGUN Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nevada; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen was born in Peoria on October 15, 1981
10to Dale P. and Mary Ann Nannen; he married Sarah M. Simpson on
11August 6, 2005 in Peoria; he graduated from Olympia High School
12in 2000, where he was a 2-year captain of the swim team,
13section leader for the drum line, member of the Elite Eight
14baseball teams in 1999 and 2000, and an Illinois State Scholar;
15following his high school graduation, he attended the
16University of Illinois, where he was a member of the NROTC
17battalion and participated in the Marching Illini Drum Line
18NROTC Drill Team; and
 
 
19    WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen was commissioned a 2nd LT. in May of
202004 and attended The Basic School with Delta Company class
214-04; after TBS, he attended Naval Aviation Training with

1MATSG-21 at NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field, and NAS Meridian;
2he received his Wings of Gold in February of 2007 and was
3selected to fly F/A-18 Hornets; he moved to Lemoore,
4California, for fleet replacement training with VFA-125 in May
5of 2007; after finishing carrier qualification, he reported for
6duty with MAG-11 at MCAS Miramarl; in June of 2008, he joined
7VMFA (AW)-232 and deployed from May to December of 2010 in
8support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.2 to Kandahar Airfield
9in Afghanistan; while with the Red Devils, he served as NATOPS,
10Ground Safety, Airframes, and Embark Officers; he attended
11Tactical Air Control Party training in May of 2011 and
12proceeded to Camp Pendleton, California, for duty as a forward
13air controller with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance
14battalion; he again deployed to Afghanistan from October of
152011 to May of 2012 with 1st LAR in support of OEF 12.1 in the
16lower Helmand River Valley in Afghanistan; he supported every
17company within 1st LAR and conducted the first company level
18helicopter operations within the battle space; he returned to
19Camp Pendleton and subsequently detached from the battalion for
20refresher training at VMFAT-101; in August of 2012, he
21transferred to VMFA (AW)-242, where he served as the assistant
22operations officer; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen's awards and decorations include the
24NATO Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Global War
25on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the

1National Defense Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy
2Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Air
3Medal; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Maj. Nannen is survived by his wife, Sarah;
5children, Peter, Curtis, Betsy, and Isla Nannen; his parents,
6Dale and Mary Ann Nannen; 2 sisters, Bethany Nannen Miller and
7Briana Nannen; and maternal grandparents, Raymond and Elaine
8Hays; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
11SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
12Interstate 155 between the Delavan Exit (15) and the Hopedale
13Exit (19) as the "Maj. Reid B. Nannen Memorial Highway"; and be
14it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
16is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
17State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
18giving notice of the name the "Maj. Reid B. Nannen Memorial
19Highway"; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Maj. Nannen and the Secretary of the
22Illinois Department of Transportation.
