HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Bicycle sharing programs have been growing
3rapidly in communities and universities across the nation and
4here in the State of Illinois; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The use of bicycles is a popular mode of
6transportation at the State's public universities for students
7to travel quickly around campus when going between classes,
8heading to the library, and meeting with friends; and
 
9    WHEREAS, University students live a very active lifestyle,
10which a bicycle greatly accommodates; besides being a mode of
11transportation around campus, students are able to use their
12bicycle for exercise; and
 
13    WHEREAS, At numerous universities across the country,
14various types of bicycle sharing programs have been developed
15to help meet the needs of their students and provide options to
16travel around their campuses; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Students at these universities have been very
18receptive of the ride sharing programs because it has saved
19countless time on travel between classes that can be utilized
20in other areas; and

1    WHEREAS, Students at these universities with ride sharing
2programs in place have also enjoyed them because it reduces
3traffic congestion, with students opting to ride a bicycle
4before asking friends for rides to and from class; and
 
5    WHEREAS, A bicycle ride sharing program on Illinois public
6university campuses could greatly benefit our students with
7many of the same benefits that have helped students on other
8university campuses, such as Northern Illinois University;
9therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we encourage Illinois public universities to consider the
13possibility of starting a bicycle sharing program and
14specifically look into whether a bicycle sharing program would
15be financially feasible, environmentally friendly, and
16convenient for students.
