HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Jerry
4Umanos of Chicago; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos received his medical training
6from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and
7completed his residency at the Children's Hospital of Michigan;
8he was also certified by the American Board of Pediatrics; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos spent his career serving children
10in need, including practicing pediatric medicine at the
11Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for more than 25
12years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos and his wife, Jan Schuitema, a
14teacher, spent the past ten years living in Chicago and
15Afghanistan in order to care for and teach the neediest
16children; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was training, teaching, and
18working beside physician residents, midwives, and community
19health workers at Cure International Hospital in Kabul,
20Afghanistan to care for over 37,000 sick and injured children
21and mothers every year; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was instrumental in creating
2Empowerment Health at Cure International Hospital, a program
3aimed at teaching Afghan women basic health education and
4skills to provide health services in their communities; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On April 24, 2014, a gunman opened fired at Cure
6International Hospital, killing 3 Americans, including Dr.
7Jerry Umanos; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos is survived by his wife and their
9three children; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we mourn the passing of Dr. Jerry Umanos, and extend our
13sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
14and loved him; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Dr. Jerry Umanos as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
