HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is an aquifer located in
3east-central Illinois; the aquifer covers an area of over 4,000
4square miles in Champaign, DeWitt, Ford, Iroquois, Logan,
5Macon, McLean, Piatt, Sangamon, Tazewell, and Vermilion
6counties; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is a vital source of drinking
8water for the residents of east-central Illinois, as well as a
9source for irrigation and industrial use water; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer supplies, on average, 340
11million gallons per day of clean consumable water; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The population of east-central Illinois residents
13who depend on the Mahomet Aquifer is expected to grow from a
14current total of 100,000 to 900,000 by 2050; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Any pollution or contamination of the water of the
16Mahomet Aquifer would be detrimental to all of the residents of
17east-central Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The United States Environmental Protection Agency
19is responsible for designating aquifers as Sole Source
20Aquifers, which helps to protect aquifers from

1federally-funded projects that may contaminate groundwater;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is too important of a source
4of consumable water for the residents of east-central Illinois
5to be compromised by potential contamination; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we urge the United States Environmental Protection Agency to
9classify the Mahomet Aquifer as a Sole Source Aquifer in order
10protect the residents of east-central Illinois and ensure they
11have clean drinking water for future generations; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution are
14presented to United States Environmental Protection Agency
15Region 5 Coordinator William Spaulding, the members of the
16Illinois congressional delegation, and the Governor.
