HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Lung cancer kills 159,000 Americans every year,
3more than any other form of cancer; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer;
5secondhand smoke exposure, radon, asbestos, and genetic
6disorders have long been known to cause lung cancer; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The World Health Organization's International
8Agency for Research on Cancer recently added outdoor air
9pollution and particulate matter to the growing list of air
10pollutants known to cause lung cancer; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Although avoiding exposure to these carcinogens
12is the best way to prevent lung cancer, people cannot always
13avoid them because they are so widespread; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only
1517%, among the lowest of all types of cancer; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer
17greatly improves survival rates; however, most cases are not
18diagnosed until their later stages; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The lung cancer mortality rate for high-risk

1populations can be lowered by up to 14% through early
2detection, including low-dose CT screening; and
 
3    WHEREAS, It is estimated that 72,000 American women will
4die of lung cancer in 2014, which accounts for 26% of all
5female deaths due to cancer; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in the
7United States; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Every two-and-a-half minutes, someone in the
9United States is told that he or she has lung cancer; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In the last 36 years, the lung cancer death rate
11has fallen 28% among men while increasing 98% among women;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we hereby designate November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in
16the State of Illinois, and we encourage all residents to learn
17more about the detection and treatment of lung cancer; and be
18it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the American Lung Association.
