HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of
4EnerStar Electric Cooperative on the 75th anniversary of their
5cooperative; and
 
6    WHEREAS, EnerStar Electric Cooperative, which began as the
7Edgar Electric Co-operative Association, was officially formed
8on February 9, 1938, in Paris, Illinois, through the hard work
9and dedication of a handful of local residents wanting to
10improve living and farming conditions for themselves and their
11neighbors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Because of the lack of density, it simply was not
13possible for the for-profit utilities to make a profit serving
14rural areas with only a few farms or homes per mile of electric
15line; with the help of loans from the Rural Electrification
16Administration, these rural people banded together to form
17rural member-owned and member-governed electric cooperatives;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, This group of local residents went door to door
20signing up their neighbors to become members of Edgar Electric
21Co-operative Association and convincing them that a
22cooperative would bring lights and power to the rural area; and

1    WHEREAS, Their hard work paid off and Edgar Electric
2Co-operative Association's lines were first energized on July
315, 1939, initially serving 539 member-owners in Edgar County;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Edgar Electric Co-operative Association was
6renamed Enerstar Power in 1991, and later became Enerstar
7Electric Cooperative in 2004; EnerStar Electric Cooperative
8continues to provides reliable electric service to
9member-owners in Clark, Coles, Douglas, Edgar and Vermilion
10Counties; and
 
11    WHEREAS, For 75 years, the EnerStar Electric Cooperative
12has served its member-owners based on 7 guiding principles:
13voluntary and open membership, member-elected and controlled
14boards of directors, members' economic participation, autonomy
15and independence, education and training, cooperation among
16cooperatives, and concern for community; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we congratulate EnerStar Electric Cooperative on its 75th
20anniversary; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

1presented to EnerStar Electric Cooperative as a symbol of our
2esteem and respect.
