HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor former Downers Grove mayor
4Betty Cheever on her many life's accomplishments; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Betty Cheever started her community involvement
6in Downers Grove through work on school study committees to
7provide adequate buildings and finances to meet growth in the
81960s; she served as a voting booth commissioner, as a member
9of the Citizens Advisory Committee to establish College of
10Dupage, and was a member of the Downers Grove-Woodridge League
11of Women Voters since 1962, serving as its president from
121969-1973; she was a member of the board of the Illinois League
13of Women Voters from 1974-1977, serving 2 years as treasurer;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Betty Cheever took part in a wide-range of
16activities to better the community; she was on the Downers
17Grove village police and fire commission boards, the Village
18Forum to address cultural activities within the community, the
19Total Community Development committee, and she chaired the
20Downers Grove Heritage Fest; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In 1975, Betty Cheever was elected the first woman
22to serve as village commissioner after serving on the village

1planning commission for 8 years; 8 years after that she was
2elected mayor and served 4 consecutive terms; in addition to
3being mayor, she was on the DuPage County Water Commission, was
4president of the Mayors and Managers of DuPage County, and was
5the liquor commissioner for Downers Grove; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Since retiring she has held positions on the board
7for Good Samaritan Hospital and continues to be involved in the
8League of Women Voters; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Betty Cheever still registers voters and is a
10champion of reason, fiscal responsibility, and efficiency;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we honor Betty Cheever's life accomplishment, thank her for her
15service to the people of her community, and wish her well in
16all her future endeavours; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to Betty Cheever as an expression of our esteem and
19respect.
