HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor former Downers Grove mayor Betty Cheever on her many life's accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, Betty Cheever started her community involvement in Downers Grove through work on school study committees to provide adequate buildings and finances to meet growth in the 1960s; she served as a voting booth commissioner, as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to establish College of Dupage, and was a member of the Downers Grove-Woodridge League of Women Voters since 1962, serving as its president from 1969-1973; she was a member of the board of the Illinois League of Women Voters from 1974-1977, serving 2 years as treasurer; and

WHEREAS, Betty Cheever took part in a wide-range of activities to better the community; she was on the Downers Grove village police and fire commission boards, the Village Forum to address cultural activities within the community, the Total Community Development committee, and she chaired the Downers Grove Heritage Fest; and

WHEREAS, In 1975, Betty Cheever was elected the first woman to serve as village commissioner after serving on the village planning commission for 8 years; 8 years after that she was elected mayor and served 4 consecutive terms; in addition to being mayor, she was on the DuPage County Water Commission, was president of the Mayors and Managers of DuPage County, and was the liquor commissioner for Downers Grove; and

WHEREAS, Since retiring she has held positions on the board for Good Samaritan Hospital and continues to be involved in the League of Women Voters; and

WHEREAS, Betty Cheever still registers voters and is a champion of reason, fiscal responsibility, and efficiency; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor Betty Cheever's life accomplishment, thank her for her service to the people of her community, and wish her well in all her future endeavours; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Betty Cheever as an expression of our esteem and respect.
