HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the owners and employees of the Centralia Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's 150th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Centralia Sentinel was founded in 1863, during the Civil War; the newspaper's first editions were hand-pressed; the Sentinel was founded only 10 years after the city of Centralia was settled, allowing the city and its paper to grow up together; and

WHEREAS, In 1888, Thomas Joy purchased the Centralia Sentinel, beginning a lineage that continues to this day; and

WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel was incorporated on July 1, 1947 as Joy Publishing; and

WHEREAS, The Sentinel Building, located on East Broadway in Centralia, was placed on the Federal Register of Historic Places in the spring of 1978; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Joy and Perrine families have been very supportive of philanthropic causes in the Centralia community, most notably the Centralia Foundation, which was established in 1943; and

WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel serves as a model of integrity and honesty for the newspapers and citizens of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the owners and employees of the Centralia Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's 150th anniversary and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John Perrine, publisher of the Centralia Sentinel, as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
