HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the owners and employees
4of the Centralia Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's
5150th anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Centralia Sentinel was founded in 1863, during the
7Civil War; the newspaper's first editions were hand-pressed;
8the Sentinel was founded only 10 years after the city of
9Centralia was settled, allowing the city and its paper to grow
10up together; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In 1888, Thomas Joy purchased the Centralia
12Sentinel, beginning a lineage that continues to this day; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel was incorporated on July 1,
141947 as Joy Publishing; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Sentinel Building, located on East Broadway in
16Centralia, was placed on the Federal Register of Historic
17Places in the spring of 1978; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Joy and Perrine families
19have been very supportive of philanthropic causes in the
20Centralia community, most notably the Centralia Foundation,

1which was established in 1943; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel serves as a model of
3integrity and honesty for the newspapers and citizens of the
4State of Illinois; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we congratulate the owners and employees of the Centralia
8Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's 150th anniversary
9and wish them continued success and happiness in the future;
10and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to John Perrine, publisher of the Centralia Sentinel,
13as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
