HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Benjamin Mills
4Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on its
5100th Anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution is a
7national patriotic organization whose members are direct
8descendants of those patriots who fought in the American
9Revolution, who with unfailing loyalty served sailors,
10soldiers, and civil officers, or rendered material aid to the
11cause of American independence during the Revolutionary War;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution is the
14only women's organization reporting to the United States
15Congress each year; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the
17American Revolution was organized on June 5, 1913, by Ms.
18Charles E. Davidson, who was a Bond City Resident; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The majority of the 27 charter members were
20descendants of Benjamin Mills, who served in the Revolutionary
21War as a private and then 2nd lieutenant, in the Maryland

1troops, thus it was decided to use his name for the chapter's
2designation; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The first Benjamin Mills Chapter officers were
4Mrs. Charles E. Davidson, Regent; Mrs. George F. Casey,
5Vice-Regent; Dr. Marie Louise Ravold, Recording Secretary;
6Mrs. J. Ralph Seamon, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs. Frank E.
7Watson, Registrar; Miss Mabel Victoria Wait, Treasurer; Mrs.
8C.J. Lindley, Historian; and Mrs. E. Parson, Chaplain; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1916, the chapter purchased a 1/4 acre tract of
10land from Mr. Neumann about 8 miles southwest of Greenville
11where the DAR Daughters placed a monument at the approximate
12site of Hills' Fort, built in 1811; in 1928, the chapter
13unveiled the DAR Madonna of the Trail monument in Vandalia to
14commemorate the pioneer mothers of the covered wagon days; in
151929, a plaque listing revolutionary soldiers buried in Bond
16County was placed at the north entrance of the court house; in
171935, a marker was placed on south 5th Street at the site where
18Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln spoke in 1858; in 1951,
19a monument was placed at the site of Perrysville, the first
20county seat of Bond County; and
 
21    WHEREAS, At this anniversary date, outgoing Benjamin Mills
22Chapter Officers are: Cynthia McAlpin Hunter, Regent; Veronica
23Hunter Schraer, Vice-Regent; Virginia Whitlock Wise, Chaplain;

1Jeanette Dothager, Secretary; Jessie Thomas Maas, Treasurer;
2Karen Dewey Bauer-Reelitz, Registrar and Historian; newly
3elected Benjamin Mills Chapter Officers for the Centennial
42013-2015 term are: Jeanette Dothager, Regent; Lisa Marie
5Williams Stephens, Vice-Regent; Virginia Whitlock Wise,
6Chaplain; Diana Lynn Williams Sanders, Secretary; Jessie
7Thomas Maas, Treasurer; and Karen Dewey Bauer-Reelitz,
8Registrar and Historian; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Benjamin Mills Chapter sponsors Good
10Citizenship Awards at the high schools in Bond and Fayette
11counties, American History Essay contests, and school and
12community flag/veteran programs; it promotes support for
13veterans, celebrations of patriotic holidays, and presents the
14flag of the United States of America to civic organizations;
15they sponsor Hills' Fort Society, Children of the American
16Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution Schools, and
17many national and special committees; and
 
18    WHEREAS, At all chapter meetings, the Benjamin Mills
19Chapter begins each meeting ritual with a prayer; they recite
20The Pledge of Allegiance, The American's Creed, and sing The
21Star Spangled Banner; as a Daughter of the American Revolution,
22each daughter makes an oath and accepts the duty to: love our
23country, support The Constitution of The United States of
24America, obey its' laws, and to respect its' flag and to defend

1it against all enemies; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the
3American Revolution will mark its 100th year anniversary on
4June 5, 2013, through a celebration luncheon and grave marking,
5in Bond County; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of
9the American Revolution on celebrating its 100th Anniversary
10and wish the organization and its members continued success;
11and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the
14American Revolution as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
