HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the congregation of St.
4Malachy Precious Blood Church and School on the occasion of the
5church's celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the
6Emancipation Proclamation; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by
8President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863; the Proclamation
9declared that those enslaved in Confederate territory were to
10be immediately freed; and
 
11    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Precious Blood Church and School is
12the oldest serving Black Catholic School on Chicago's West
13Side; the church, which was established in 1882, was home to
14the first black priest ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago,
15Roland Lambert, who was a pioneer in the teaching of black
16history; St. Malachy Precious Blood was also once home to
17Mother Teresa and her order, who lived at the church and worked
18in the community; and
 
19    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Precious Blood Church is an active
20participant in the Chicago community; the church administers
21programs for the homeless and the poor in the community and
22runs an afterschool program for the school and surrounding CPS

1Schools; the church also continues to educate and inform the
2community of the church's history; and
 
3    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Precious Blood Church was honored by
4the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of the Chicago Archdiocese
5for its work in the community with the poor; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The congregation of St. Malachy Precious Blood
7Church and School will celebrate this momentous occasion on
8June 29, 2013 at St. Malachy Precious Blood Church; therefore,
9be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we congratulate the congregation of St. Malachy Precious Blood
13Church and School on the occasion of the church's celebration
14of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation; and
15be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to St. Malachy Precious Blood Church and School as a
18symbol of our esteem and respect.
