HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, November 22, 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper at 12:30pm standard time on November 22, 1963 while traveling in a presidential limousine through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas; and

WHEREAS, President John F. Kennedy was accompanied in the motorcade by his wife, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, along with Texas Governor John Connally, who was wounded by gunfire; and

WHEREAS, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in connection with the assassination and was killed 2 days later by Jack Ruby; and

WHEREAS, Elected on January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy was the only Catholic and the 2nd-youngest President to serve in the White House; and

WHEREAS, Despite his short-lived presidency, John F. Kennedy left behind a remarkable legacy of leadership; and

WHEREAS, President John F. Kennedy will be remembered for many accomplishments, including steering our nation away from the brink of war during the Cuban Missile Crisis, propelling America into the space race, founding the Peace Corps, and championing civil rights for all Americans; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge all churches to toll bells and all schools to designate a moment of silence at the exact hour and minute of November 22, 2013 to mark the occasion of this solemn anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be made available to those who request it.
