HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The University of Illinois at Chicago's
3Department of Urban Planning and Policy is celebrating its 40th
4anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On February 6, 1973, the Planning Task Force of
6the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Urban
7Sciences delivered recommendations to its new dean, Charles
8Orlebeke, to open the Master of Urban Planning and Policy
9academic program in the fall of 1973; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The college at that time consisted of 2 units; the
11academic program would lead to the Master of Urban Planning and
12Policy while the Center for Urban Studies would continue to
13focus on research and public service activities; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The University of Illinois at Chicago's
15Department of Urban Planning and Policy has since grown to
16become one of the largest graduate planning programs in the
17nation and the only accredited planning program in the Chicago
18area; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Department of Urban Planning and Policy's
20Masters in Urban Planning and Policy program ranks in the top
21tier nationally in the Planetizen guide to urban planning

1programs and is a recognized leader in urban planning and
2policy education in the world; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Department of Urban Planning and Policy is now
4housed in University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Urban
5Planning and Public Affairs, a college established through the
6University's Great Cities Initiative to provide innovative
7urban planning and public management education that puts
8engaged research to purposeful use at home and abroad; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics
10projects an increase of 14% to 19% faster than average
11employment growth for urban and regional planners; and
 
12    WHEREAS, There are few investments more important than
13those we make in our education and improving the human
14condition; in the words of Daniel Burnham, "Make no little
15plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood."; therefore, be
16it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we designate the date of February 22, 2014 as UIC Urban
20Planning and Policy Day in the State of Illinois and urge
21citizens of this State to foster the growth and improvement of
22our communities in conjunction with the education and research

1of more than 2000 University of Illinois at Chicago Urban
2Planning and Policy students and alumni; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the University of Illinois at Chicago as a symbol
5of our esteem and respect.
