HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Earlean
4Lindsey of Chicago, who passed away on January 8, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was born on August 4, 1925 in
6Sawyerville, Alabama to Willie "Bo" and Ethel Taylor; she spent
7her early years in rural Alabama and moved to Chicago in 1946;
8she married Bernard Lindsey in 1952; following his passing in
91981, she married Robert Calhoun; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey's early jobs were in the domestic
11and restaurant industry, but in 1959 she moved to the Westside
12of Chicago and began a career as a community organizer; she was
13one of the founders of the Westside Association for Community
14Action, where she was elected President for life; she was a
15founder and board member emeritus for the Center for New
16Horizons, an original member of the University of Illinois
17Urban Health Program Advisory Council, founding member of the
18University of Illinois Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center's
19Community Advisory Council, former President of the Heritage
20Manor, and a founding member of the Chicago Commons
21Association's Jackie Robinson House; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was a strong advocate for

1education; she was active with Malcolm X College in its early
2years and was a former member of Chicago Public School District
39's local school council; she was a past board member of the
4Corporate Community Schools of America; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was also passionate about
6healthcare; she was one of the pioneers in the advent of
7Community Health Centers and served on a committee for
8President John F. Kennedy's Commission on Community Mental
9Health Centers; during the 1960s and 1970s she gave workshops
10and seminars on community health and organizing across the
11United States and abroad, and she was one of the first
12Presidents of the National Association of Community Health
13Centers; she was an original member of the Mile Square
14Federation and one of the founders of the Mile Square Health
15Center; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey received numerous awards and
17recognitions for her community service and leadership; most
18notably, she was recognized in the United States House of
19Representatives for her community service in 1998, and the City
20of Chicago dedicated the street corner of Damen and Washington
21as "Mrs. Lindsey Drive" in her honor; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was a member of Pilgrim Rest
23Missionary Baptist Church on the Westside of Chicago for 55

1years; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey was preceded in death by her
3parents; her step-mother, Vileter Taylor; her children, Earl,
4Ethel, Donald, and Michael; her grandchild, Cletus; her
5step-child, Bernard, Jr.; her brothers, Frank, Robert, Jacob,
6Richard, Curtis, Carlton, R.L., Joseph, and Edward; and her
7first and second husbands Bernard and Robert; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Earlean Lindsey is survived by her daughters,
9Janice, Pamela, and Patricia (Leroy); her sons, Leroy, Garnell,
10and Marvin (Beverly); her Godson, Johnny Brown; her brothers,
11Willie, Jimmie (Hazel), James, Luke (Mary), and Henry (Mamie);
12her sisters, Annie Pearl (Joe Lee) and Leslie; her 20
13grandchildren; her dozens of great-grandchildren and
14great-great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, and
15friends; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we mourn the passing of Earlean Lindsey, and extend our sincere
19condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
20her; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to Earlean Lindsey as an expression of our deepest
