SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Thomas Lorenzo Garrett of Chicago, who passed away on January 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was born in Chicago on November 13, 1950 to Roosevelt "Nelson" Lorenzo and Susie M. Johnson Garrett; he attended Beidler Elementary School where he was a member of the crossing guard and the drum and bugle corp; he was a member of Central Memorial Baptist in Chicago where he was a junior usher and active in Sunday school; later he joined St. Stephen AME Church and enjoyed bible study, church celebrations, and singing in the Male Chorus; he attended John Marshall High School where he was a member of the track team and student council; he was enrolled at Malcolm X Junior College; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was employed by the City of Chicago, and worked for a variety of companies including the United States Postal Service as a semi-truck driver; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett enjoyed traveling and cherished his freedom on the road; he also enjoyed jazz, reading, and telling jokes; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was preceded in death by parents Roosevelt and Susie Garrett; sister, Judy Garrett; brother, Maurice Garrett; aunts, Alzada Scott, Geneva Pye, Iola Cowans, Annie Griggs, and Lillian Griggs; and uncles, Awbrey Johnson, Thomas Wilson Johnson, Vernon Patillo, James Cowans, and Oliver William Griggs, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett is survived by daughter, Kia Sheree Garrett; son, LaRoy Rome Whitten (Caressa); granddaughter, Alexis Danae Callico; sister, Deborah (Otis) Garrett Thomas; the entire family of step-sister, Beatrice Greene; uncle, Robert Louis Johnson; aunts, Versa Patillo and Malzina Johnson; nieces, Nikki Atiya Garret and Teresa Jean Thomas; nephews, Bradley Kenyatta Thomas, Rory Momon, and William Johnson; great-nieces, Atiya Hall, Naima Hall, Serenity Johnson, Makayla Johnson, Adella Faith Thomas, Jasmyn Allen Clark Ware; great-nephews, Devin Hall, Ramsey Momon, Debra Marie Garrett-Frelix, Albert Frelix, Arlene Mack-Thorne, Mansfield Thorne, and Cherie Momon; plus numerous cousins and friends who are like family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Thomas Lorenzo Garrett, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Thomas Garrett as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
