SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Thomas Lorenzo Garrett of Chicago, who
4passed away on January 21, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was born in Chicago on November 13,
61950 to Roosevelt "Nelson" Lorenzo and Susie M. Johnson
7Garrett; he attended Beidler Elementary School where he was a
8member of the crossing guard and the drum and bugle corp; he
9was a member of Central Memorial Baptist in Chicago where he
10was a junior usher and active in Sunday school; later he joined
11St. Stephen AME Church and enjoyed bible study, church
12celebrations, and singing in the Male Chorus; he attended John
13Marshall High School where he was a member of the track team
14and student council; he was enrolled at Malcolm X Junior
15College; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was employed by the City of
17Chicago, and worked for a variety of companies including the
18United States Postal Service as a semi-truck driver; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett enjoyed traveling and cherished
20his freedom on the road; he also enjoyed jazz, reading, and
21telling jokes; and

1    WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett was preceded in death by parents
2Roosevelt and Susie Garrett; sister, Judy Garrett; brother,
3Maurice Garrett; aunts, Alzada Scott, Geneva Pye, Iola Cowans,
4Annie Griggs, and Lillian Griggs; and uncles, Awbrey Johnson,
5Thomas Wilson Johnson, Vernon Patillo, James Cowans, and Oliver
6William Griggs, Sr.; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Thomas Garrett is survived by daughter, Kia Sheree
8Garrett; son, LaRoy Rome Whitten (Caressa); granddaughter,
9Alexis Danae Callico; sister, Deborah (Otis) Garrett Thomas;
10the entire family of step-sister, Beatrice Greene; uncle,
11Robert Louis Johnson; aunts, Versa Patillo and Malzina Johnson;
12nieces, Nikki Atiya Garret and Teresa Jean Thomas; nephews,
13Bradley Kenyatta Thomas, Rory Momon, and William Johnson;
14great-nieces, Atiya Hall, Naima Hall, Serenity Johnson,
15Makayla Johnson, Adella Faith Thomas, Jasmyn Allen Clark Ware;
16great-nephews, Devin Hall, Ramsey Momon, Debra Marie
17Garrett-Frelix, Albert Frelix, Arlene Mack-Thorne, Mansfield
18Thorne, and Cherie Momon; plus numerous cousins and friends who
19are like family; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Thomas Lorenzo Garrett, and extend our sincere condolences to
23his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
24further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Thomas Garrett as an expression of
3our deepest sympathy.
