SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Eliza Butler Jones of North Chicago, who passed away on May 5, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Eliza Jones was born in Bernice, Louisiana on March 5, 1924 to Ollie and Rebecca Davis; growing up, she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bernice; and

WHEREAS, Eliza Jones moved to Evanston in 1948 and spent many years as a domiciliary worker; and

WHEREAS, Eliza Jones was a member of the Second Baptist Church, where she was a lead soloist, and later joined Springfield Baptist Church, where she also sang in the choir; in 1976, she moved to North Chicago and joined St. Paul Baptist Church; she later became a member of Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother Board and was a devoted giver; and

WHEREAS, Eliza Jones was preceded in death by her father, Ollie Davis; her mother, Rebecca Davis; brother, O.D. Davis; a sister, Linda Fay Kennedy; a niece, Bridget Davis; and 2 nephews, Roderick Davis and Elijah Cooper; and

WHEREAS, Eliza Jones is survived by her 2 sisters, Lena Mae Scott and Audrey H. Nixon; a sister-in-law, Ruthie Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Eliza Butler Jones, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Eliza Jones as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
