SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Clarence W. Schawk, who passed away on September 20, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Schawk was born on March 21, 1926 in Chicago; his parents were Clarence E. and Adell (nee Treptow) Schawk; he married Marilyn Rieck on June 6, 1953 in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Schawk was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps' 2nd Division, 2nd Battalion in the Pacific theater during the infamous Battle of Okinawa; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Schawk was the founder and longtime owner and operator of Schawk, Inc. in Chicago; he and his wife were also the owners and operators of the Geneva Inn on Lake Geneva; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Schawk and his wife were the founders of the Clarence W. and Marilyn G. Schawk Family Foundation, which has been involved with many organizations, including the Chicago Lutheran Educational Fund, the United Way, the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, the National Foundation for Abused and Neglected Children, the Neediest Kids Fund, the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts of America, the LEAPS Program at Valparaiso University, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, inner city schools in Chicago, The Time is Now, and several other worthy causes; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Schawk is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn; a sister, Dorothy Schawk; 4 children, Cathy Schawk, David (Teryl) Schawk, Judy (Bruce) Gallo, and Lisa (Scott) Stearns; 7 grandchildren, Kelly (Rob) Douglass, Colleen (Tom) Barlo, Kara (Adam) O'Dempsey, Jessica Gallo, William Stearns, Mallory Stearns, and Sarah Stearns; and 6 great-grandchildren, Ava, Tyler, Addison, Trevor, Travis, and Scarlet; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Clarence W. Schawk; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Clarence Schawk as an expression of our sympathy.
